How to choose due diligence software for a venture fund
Start from where your fund loses time and conviction: data providers and startup databases help you find and size companies, relationship CRMs track who knows whom, and a due diligence workspace checks what a company claims and records why you decided. To judge a diligence tool, ask where each claim is checked, how it knows a record is the same company, whether it reads deals against your own mandate, whether a person records the decision, and what its AI keeps.

The kinds of tool on a fund’s shortlist
They overlap at the edges, so name the job first. Each description of another vendor comes from that vendor’s own pages, cited below.
Due diligence workspaces
Check what a company claims, read it against your mandate and record the decision. Aventro is built for this; DiligenceGPT, Startup Due Dil and VentureScope also check claims or screen deals.1,2,3,4
Aventro comparedGeneral AI assistants
Read, draft and research the web and your files. ChatGPT’s deep research works from the open web, uploaded files and connected apps; Claude’s Research searches the web and your work tools.5,6
Aventro vs ChatGPTStartup databases
Find companies early, from signals like hiring and fundraising. Harmonic calls itself “the startup discovery engine” and lists 40 million companies.7,8
Aventro vs HarmonicPrivate-market data
Size markets and pull comparable deals, investors and funds. PitchBook lists 13.4M+ companies and 3.2M+ deals.9
Aventro vs PitchBookRelationship CRMs
Track who knows whom, with activity captured from email and calendar. Affinity calls itself “the AI-first private capital CRM”.10
Aventro vs AffinityConfigurable deal platforms
One governed system for deals and relationships across many teams. Intapp DealCloud serves private capital, banking, legal and advisory firms.11
Fund operations
Run LP fundraising, capital calls, fund accounting and reporting. Decile Hub is built for small venture teams.12
Seven questions to ask a due diligence vendor
Ask them in a demo, on one of your own past deals, where you already know the answers.
Where is each claim checked?
A claim is only as good as the source it was checked against. Ask for the list of sources, and which one wins when two disagree.
In Aventro: Each claim is checked against the register it should appear in. An official register outranks a commercial aggregator, which outranks the open web, and a name match alone counts only as a lead.13
How does it know the record is the same company?
Companies share names. A tool that confirms a match on the name alone will put a stranger’s record on your deal.
In Aventro: A check counts as verified only when something ties the record to this company, such as its registered number. A name match alone is reported as not found, with the lead named.13
Does it read deals against your own mandate?
A strong company outside your mandate still gets rejected. Fit and strength are different questions and need different numbers.
In Aventro: Fund Fit reads each deal against your Fund DNA, criterion by criterion; the Aventro score, for the company’s strength, sits beside it.14,15
What happens when the documents disagree?
Decks, accounts and calls drift apart. You want every reading kept, and a way to ask the company.
In Aventro: When the deck, the accounts and a call disagree on a figure, each reading is shown side by side, with a question you can send the company.16
Does the memo use your template, and what does it leave blank?
Your committee already has a format. A tool that fills a gap with plausible text has written something nobody checked.
In Aventro: The memo follows your fund’s own template, and every fill names the places it could not answer from the deal.17,18
Who records the decision, and what is kept?
Six months on you will want to know why you rejected it, and what would have changed your mind.
In Aventro: A person with the Decides permission records it, in two steps that freeze what it was made on. Memory keeps the reasons and checks the conditions for looking again.17,19
What does the AI keep, and what can it do alone?
Deal documents are confidential. Ask whether model providers retain them, and whether the AI can change a record without a person.
In Aventro: Every AI model call runs with zero data retention, and nothing Aventro AI drafts is saved until a person confirms it. Evidence is encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM, under per-deal derived keys.20,21
A venture due diligence checklist
What to verify on every deal, and where the record that settles it lives.
The company is who it says it is
Check the company register of the country it is incorporated in, and its LEI if it has one, for the legal name, number, status and parent company.
In Aventro: Company registers in Israel, the UK, the US, Norway and Finland, and GLEIF, with a match tied to the company by something like its registered number.22,13
The team is who the deck says
Check each founder’s background and the directors on the register against the deck.
In Aventro: Who is on the team is one of the claims read out of the intake and the documents, and each claim that can be checked is queried against the source that holds it.13
The IP exists and belongs to the company
Look each patent up at the patent office that granted it, and check the assignee.
In Aventro: Patents are checked at the patent offices.16
The figures agree across documents
Revenue, growth and burn should match across the deck, the accounts and what was said on calls.
In Aventro: When the deck, the accounts and a call disagree on a figure, each reading is shown side by side, with a question you can send the company.16
The regulatory position is real
For health, check the regulator’s device records and the trial registries; for fintech, the licences and the partner bank.
In Aventro: For a health company, the FDA’s device records, EUDAMED and the trial registries are read against the route the company states. A fintech is asked about licences, its partner bank and credit losses.13,16
The deal fits your mandate
Stage, sector, cheque size, geography, business model, return target and exclusions, each met or missed.
In Aventro: Every deal gets Fund Fit against your Fund DNA (stages, sectors, cheque size, geography, business models, return targets and exclusions), each criterion shown met or missed.14,15
Every gap has an owner and a date
What could not be checked becomes a question for the company, and stays labelled unconfirmed until it is answered.
In Aventro: A claim that could not be checked is reported as unconfirmed, and Aventro AI drafts the request to the company, which nothing sends until you do.13,16
Questions
Is a CRM enough for due diligence?
A CRM keeps track of the deal and the people around it. Diligence also needs the company’s claims checked against outside records and a record of why you decided, so look for those two things whichever tool you use.
What is on a venture capital due diligence checklist?
The company’s identity at its official register, the team, the money raised and the cap table, the IP at the patent office, the figures across the deck, the accounts and calls, the regulatory position where it applies, the fit with your mandate, and an owner and a date for every gap.
Is ChatGPT or Claude enough for VC due diligence?
A general assistant can read a deck, summarise a data room and draft questions. Diligence also needs each claim checked against the record it should appear in, a match tied to the company by something like its registered number, the numbers computed rather than written, and a record of the decision your team keeps, so check whether its answers name the record they came from.
How is due diligence software priced?
It varies by vendor: some publish per-user prices, others quote on request, and each comparison page lists the vendor’s terms with its source. Aventro is one annual contract for the whole team, quoted on seats and deal volume after a free demo on one live deal of yours.
Does Aventro make the investment decision?
No. Aventro screens, checks and drafts. A person on your team records the decision, with their own reasons, and Aventro does not give investment advice.
